Johnny Romeo: Electric Boogaloo

Johnny Romeo’s new, ‘kitsch-pop’ paintings are inspired by American artist Mel Ramos and the advent of graffiti and hip-hop in North America during the 1970s, with the title of the exhibition a nod to the funk dance style of the same name. The artist adds humour to his colourful palette of opaque hues and text by mis-matching cultural icons and motifs across time, from portraits of Michael Jackson with a Flemish collar to Vincent van Gogh donning a Batman mask.
