The 2013 SALA Festival

With 4917 participating artists involved in 502 exhibitions and events, SALA Festival has a big program in store for 2013. SALA brings together professional, emerging and amateur artists in a single event over the month of August, with a substantial showing of work that represents visual art across its many forms. This year’s SALA Festival will be officially opened by the Hon Chloë Fox Minister Assisting the Minister for the Art on Thursday 1 August at a special event at the Art Gallery of South Australia. The keynote speaker on the evening will be acclaimed South Australian artist Robert Hannaford. The recipient of the 2014 SALA book published by Wakefield Press will also be announced on the night and the 2013 SALA book about internationally acclaimed Australian ceramicist Stephen Bowers will be officially launched.

Highlights of the SALA Festival will include open studios, art tours and talks. There is a wide range of art tours this year including a special Art Collectors Tour on Saturday 3 August, Bring the Baby Art Tour on Friday 9 August, Word Art Tour on Friday 16 August, Aboriginal Art Tour on Saturday 17 August, bi-lingual Chinese Art Tours every weekend plus much more. Artist talks are happening throughout the Festival – a key event will be Let’s Talk about Art and Words on Friday 16 August, also part of the inaugural Word Festival, the event presents this year’s SALA Publication recipient Stephen Bowers and special guests in a conversation about the intrinsic relationship between art and words.

The festival will culminate with a final day celebration, SALA on Show on Sunday 25 August 10.30am – 5pm at Unley Shopping Centre on Unley Road.  This huge day of visual art activities includes a pop-up gallery with art works for sale, artists in residence, children’s art workshops and entertainment throughout the day. It sounds like a diverse and ambitious program – not to be missed!
