Julie Harris: the ‘heath paintings

Julie Harris recently moved to Blackheath, in the Blue Mountains of NSW. The physical beauty of the area has had a profound influence on her work, resulting in a new series of abstract paintings. These are not literal depictions of the area, but rather explorations into the process of abstraction as a way to capture the feeling of a place.

The process of painting is important to Harris, and her sophisticated knowledge and use of materials is apparent when looking at these works. They have a wonderful luminosity and impression of space and create the feeling of being immersed in a landscape. The light, sounds and other ephemeral features that make up our surroundings are evoked and true essence of place revealed.
