For 45 years, the name Papunya has been synonymous with contemporary Indigenous art. Yet, for several decades, painting at Papunya itself had been sporadic, until the establishment of a new community-owned art centre, Papunya Tjupi in 2007.
Now the work of Papunya Tjupi’s artists has reached a new level of finesse. These new paintings, many by the descendants of the Western Desert’s most famed painters, show an inspirational artistic evolution, reminiscent of the early days of Papunya painting, and of a tradition both utterly contemporary and entirely ancient.
