Leyla Stevens is an Australian-Balinese artist who works with photography and the moving image, investigating the connection and friction that takes place when operating between two disparate cultures. Often working with durational video of Balinese and Indonesian dance performances, she employs multi-channel video installations to address social and political issues underlying Balinese culture and history, below its superficial image as a touristic idyll.
Here, two films propose a retelling of Balinese art histories and overlooked or deviant female biographies through a matrilineal lens, dance, and extreme metal vocals.
