Maryanne Wick’s new series of small, sublime still life compositions explore ‘sense of place’ by drawing on nature, the artist’s environment and surrounds. According to Wick, ‘living between the mountains and the ocean, you often come across a special find or see something unusual – the glimpse of a lizard’s tail, a rainbow inside a shell, a rotting piece of fruit split by the fall, an open pod showing golden seeds, a chalky piece of cuttlefish, a reflection in a puddle, pink light after a rainstorm. They are nature’s message to us, in small, apparently insignificant, ways, that life is precious and always unpredictable’.
These special finds and observations from her environment, together with ceramic pieces and objects acquired over time, form and flavour the artist’s still life compositions.
