Photography: Real and Imagined

Featuring iconic photographs alongside contemporary approaches to the medium, Photography: Real and Imagined is the largest survey of the NGV’s Photography collection, with over 270 works captured across 200 years by Australian and international practitioners. Twenty-one thematic sections exploring subject matter such as light, place and environment, consumption, conflict, community, and death, interrogate the proposition that photographs are either grounded in reality – a record, a document, a reflection of the world – or the product of imagination, storytelling, and illusion; and on occasion, operate in both realms.
