Telly Tuita: Tongpop’s Great Expectations

This is the first solo exhibition staged by performative artist Telly Tuita. Born in Tonga, raised in Western Sydney and now living in Aotearoa/New Zealand, Tuita describes his artistic practice as “Tongpop,” a conglomeration of mixed media painting, installation, and multi-channel video that captures Tuita’s culturally diverse upbringing.

Tuita encourages visitors to recognise their own lives in his story through different stages – in his words, “dawn, day and dusk” – especially the conflict between great expectations of ourselves and the expectations of our contemporary global and technological reality.
