Tokyo is Yours: Meg Hewitt

Tokyo is Yours

Set in Japan following the Great East Earthquake of 2011, Meg Hewitt’s visceral photography depicts street life in Tokyo. Inspired by film noir, manga and surrealism ‘It is a quest to explore the layers between things, memories, human connection, fear and escapism through the fantasy and metaphor I find in reality,’ remarks the artist. The juxtaposition of black and white, high contrast photographs highlight the dual nature of the title along with being read from either the front (western) or the back (Japanese). The series won ‘Fringe Artist of the Year’ at the Ballarat Foto Biennale 2017 and an exhibition of works in the book can be viewed at Flinders Street Gallery, Sydney through December.
