Ten Cubed is a self-described ‘art experiment’. In 2010 they began a ten-year project to acquire and showcase the work of outstanding contemporary artists exhibiting in Australia in various media forms; sculpture, painting, video art, photography and more.
On Saturday 24 October, 10/10 Executive Director Dianne Gringlas announced the final two artist to be included in the Ten Cubed collection. Joining Pat Brassington, Jonathan Delafield Cook, Alasdair McLuckie, Anne-Marie May, David Rosetzky, Tim Silver, Daniel von Sturmer and David Wadelton as the ten core artists in the collection is Noel McKenna and Alexander Knox both represented by Niagara Galleries, Melbourne.
An avid collector of Noel McKenna’s work for over a decade, Dianne has always admired his particular painting style.
McKenna works in a variety of media, including oil, enamel and watercolour, lithography and etching, ceramic and metal. He produces offbeat depictions of everyday scenes, often including displaced objects, people and animals. His spare canvases hint at narratives beyond the picture plane, often movingly depicting the relationship between humans and animals.
Alexander Knox only recently came to the attention of Dianne and Collection Curator Ada Moshinsky at his exhibition at Melbourne’s Murray White Room. The fine sculptural work so impressed both Dianne and Ada that they bought the entire show for Ten Cubed and immediately identified him as one of the ten artists of the collection.
Now that all ten artists of 10/10 have been announced, Dianne and Ada will embark on an exciting new challenge. They will establish Ten Cubed 2, another ten artists but with no regional limitations. Accordingly the first artist to be part of the new Ten Cubed 2 collection is Liu Zhouquan, a Chinese artist whose work was featured in the 2012 Sydney Biennale.
To celebrate the half-way point in the project, Ten Cubed presents ‘So Far…’, celebrating five years of the Ten Cubed collection with a group exhibition featuring the work of all ten selected artists, all of whom have all held solo exhibitions at the gallery since it opened in 2013.
