2013 Moran Prize winners

The winners of the 2013 Moran Prizes were announced at 10am today, October 23 at a press announcement at the prizes new home historic Georgian building Juniper Hall located at 250 Oxford Street, Paddington, NSW. Selected from a field of over 900 portrait entries, 3000 open photographic entries and 7000 student entries. AUD$300,000 in prizes and monies were awarded to winners and place-getters. The Moran Prizes exhibition was opened by former Art Gallery of NSW director, Edmund Capon AOM,OBE.

Judges of this year’s prestigious Doug Moran National Portrait Prize were Daniel Thomas AO, and Ben Quilty winner of the 2009 Doug Moran Portrait Prize for his portrait of Jimmy Barnes.

Prolific Sydney-based artist, Nigel Milsom has been named the $150,000 winner of the 2013 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize for his work titled, ‘Uncle Paddy’.

The Runner-up prize of $10,000 was awarded to Lee Wise of Oxenford, Queensland for his work titled, ‘Pure’.

The Judges of the 2013 Moran Contemporary Photographic Prizes were esteemed international Visual Arts Editor and Curator, Elisabeth Biondi, curator of the Australian Centre of Photography Tony Nolan and Getty images’ portrait and editorial specialists Cameron Spencer and Ryan Pierse.

First prize for the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize of $50,000 was awarded to John Janson-Moore for his work ‘Nyirripi Girl with Finger’.

Second prize for the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize of $30,000 was awarded to Jon Frank for his work ‘African Australian Boy’

Two Highly Commended prizes of $10,000 each were awarded in the Open Section to Victor Caringal for ‘Since I was 6 years old” and Tamara Dean for The River’.

The Secondary Schools Sections were awarded as follows:  Years 7 and 8 winner, Phoebe Pride of Concord, NSW, was awarded $2,000 for her work ‘Pride’; Years 9-10 winner Lilly Orton of Mornington, NSW, was awarded $3,000 for her word ‘Summer Nights’; and Years 11-12 winner William Stever of Eleebana, NSW has won $5,000 for his work ‘Summer’.

All finalists in the Primary Schools section will each receive photographic equipment.

Peter Moran of the Moran Prizes congratulated this years winners. “2013 marks a quarter of a century of excellence for the Moran Prizes. Since our families commitment to the arts 25 years ago, the Moran Prizes have grown in strength and depth, shown by an increasing number of entries year upon year and world wide attention to the prize, 2013 shows a display of some of the best works seen by Moran Arts Foundation and it’s Judges to date, this year’s exhibition is one not to be missed” said Peter Moran.
