Northern Beaches Council have announced the People’s Choice winners of the 2023 Northern Beaches Environmental Art & Design Prize competition. Congratulations to Ember McCabe for her artwork Ripple Effect, Shona Wilson for Seeding | Receding, and Penelope Oates for Entangled.
Mayor Sue Heins congratulated the winners, who each received a $1,000 award, and praised their creativity and passion for environmental issues: “They, along with the many other exhibition works contribute to a positive discussion around our environment, the climate and ideas for the future.”
Now in its third year, the Environmental Art & Design Prize brings together a community of creatives to highlight our environmental concerns and hopes across the nation. This year’s 215 selected finalists presented fresh perspectives on our global climate crisis and sustainable life on Earth via a range of contemporary practices, from fashion and functional design to ceramics, sculpture, painting, photography, and film. Finalists’ works were displayed across three exhibition sites over the past month: Manly Art Gallery & Museum, Curl Curl Creative Space and Mona Vale Creative Space Gallery; and currently viewable online.
The winners of prizes in the competition’s nine categories (Ceramics & small sculpture; Film; Interdisciplinary collaboration; Painting & mixed media; Works on paper & photography; Wearable design; Functional design; Young artists and designers 7-12 years and 13–18 years), as awarded by a panel of expert judges, were announced in early August.
