Maria Fernanda Cardoso: Spiders of Paradise

Maria Fernanda Cardoso uses unconventional and organic materials to explore the relationship between nature, culture, and science.

This MCA touring exhibition presents a suite of new, large-scale photographs from Cardoso’s ongoing Spiders of Paradise series, alongside her video work On the Origins of Art I-II, 2016, focusing on the tiny Australian Maratus spider and its unique, brightly coloured abdomen, which form part of their elaborate mating rituals. Each image is comprised of over 1,000 individual photographs, which together reveal stunning nuances of colour and form in incredible detail.
