‘Delay’ invites audiences to negotiate a dense environment of video projection, objects, text-based correspondence and photographic images that explore escape and withdrawal as politico-personal acts of alterity and non-participation. The exhibition centres around a film, I Go Further Under (2017-18) where an isolated island off the South coast of Tasmania becomes a place of entrapment, paranoia and surveillance – yet not without the potential to break free. Weaving together mysterious characters, liminal landscapes and slippery realities, Newitt unpacks the human preoccupation with escapism.
