Vanessa Stockard: The Garden

Working in oil on canvas to depict still life objects with a surreal depth and texture, Stockard’s latest body of work was influenced by two months in the pastoral regions of France. On returning from Europe to her home in the NSW Southern Highlands, she found a new appreciation for her domicile environment, embracing her solace with vibrant colour, painting everyday objects such as the fresh fruit and flowers from her garden.

This exhibition presents a glimpse into Stockard’s enthusiasm for the natural world, through a creative process that results in powerful compositions with unusual symmetry. She uses colour as an expression of emotion, the canvas responding to her mood, to tear away her personas and reveal the vibrancy of her inner self.
