Anthony Johnson has won the 2013 City of Hobart Art Prize

Tasmanian Anthony Johnson has won the Jill Freeman 25th City of Hobart Art Prize, with his work Stutter, selected by judges Max Delany (Senior Curator, Contemporary Art, National Gallery of Victoria; Brian Parkes (CEO, Jam Factory) and Jane Stewart (Principal Curator of Art, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery).
The 2013 City of Hobart Art Prize exhibition includes photography, painting, drawing, digital media, ceramics, sculpture, design, glass and fibre.  Twelve noted Tasmanian artists are exhibiting this year, including two past Prize winners:  Tricky Walsh (2009, Sculpture) and Colin Langridge (2011, Wood), as well as the 2012 Prize (Fibre) winner, Victorian Julia deVille (2012).
Anthony Johnson is a Hobart-based artist, born in Sydney in 1974. He recently completed a Masters degree in Fine Art at the University of Tasmania, School of Art and has exhibited consistently over the past decade. He participated in Primavera 2007 and has received several prestigious awards and residencies including an Australia Council Studio Residency in Los Angeles (2008-09), Qantas Foundation Contemporary Art Award (2011).
This year’s Highly Commended was awarded to Chris Bond, Annika Koops, Grant Stevens and Belinda Winkler for their efforts.

The non-acquisitive People’s Choice Prize of $1000 to the artist gaining the most in-gallery votes and the Voter Prize of a $100 gift voucher will be awarded following the close of the exhibition.
