MAMA’s latest show exposes myths of contemporary society, and challenges our preconceptions about human nature in a new series of photographs by Anne Zahalka.
By restaging and recasting iconic Australian paintings – including those by Frederick McCubbin, Tom Roberts, Russell Drysdale and Sidney Nolan – Zahalka examines their stereotyping; subverting and challenging them with a critical, yet witty, voice. By modernising these images with a less romantic, masculine and Anglo-centric representation of Australia, she rewrites colonial egalitarianism and
bush folklore.
