ART-Town is a Public Art Project and Exhibition that has called on artists to apply for the 2014 residencies on the streets of Prahran, Windsor, South Yarra and Chapel Street North on the weekend of April 5-6, 2014. This initiative encourages artists to compose a work of art that fits within these popular public spaces. Spectators of the every day are invited to interact and engage with the featured works on show.
Art across all mediums including sculpture, painting, drawing, photography and street art will feature in the exhibition. Emerging artists have been encouraged to submit their work as the project allows great community interest and public exposure. People are able to witness the line up of contemporary work that is starting to fill the artistic scene.
ART-Town not only acts as a promotional platform for artists, it is also a perfect community program for sponsors to partner with high profile local and international destinations that result in the maximum exposure of their brand to a diverse audience. The ART-Town project has been highly successful over the last five years and continues to grow in audience as more people discover where public art fits within society. It is intriguing to see the ways in which each artist conforms to the surrounding environment and how certain factors impact the final result. This can prove to be a positive and rewarding challenge for the artist.
What is usually a simple walk down some of Melbourne’s most famous streets is transformed into a social, cultural and entertaining experience. You are invited to observe the selected work from all angles and then make your way over to one of the local cafes, enjoy a coffee, bite to eat and comfortably reflect on the art that left an impression on your day. Also, if you feel up to it, have a stroll in a selection of fashion, antique and second hand shops.
The works that are made during the ART-Town’s live art residencies are then moved to a temporary exhibition space at Chapel Off Chapel Gallery where people can return with friends and show them their favourite pieces. ART-Town is coordinated by the Chapel Street Precinct Association who warmly supports art in public spaces that reflect the precincts valuable attributes including the culture, history, people, events and surrounding neighbourhoods.
