Australiana: Designing a Nation

Surveying the iconography of “Australiana” in art and design from key chapters in our history to the present, this exhibition identifies traditions that have reflected and changed with popular notions of Australian identity and style.

Works by over 200 artists and designers – from Tom Roberts’ Shearing the Rams, 1890, to Tony Albert’s “Aboriginalia” installation Clash, 2019, and a new commission by Kenny Pittock, 100 Ice-creams – illuminate a local vernacular encompassing expressions of culture and connection to Country, national and personal identity, and playful remixes of popular culture.
