Big Fag Press

A much-anticipated house-warming for the Big Fag Press happened last month on 7 June, coinciding with a celebration of its 10th anniversary and all that is art and printing.

The Big Fag Press is an artist-run printing collective located in Sydney, together owning a 4 tonne offset print press. Recently welcomed to Archway 4, Jubilee Park Oval in Glebe, the printing collective brings a rich cultural vitality to the area, encouraging artistic social exchanges within artists and the local community.

Throughout the long weekend a temporary gallery was open to the public and displayed a range of the best print work to date, which included works by Justin Shoulder, Mirra Whale, Fiona McDonald, Pat Grant, John Demos, Keg de Souza, Ian Milliss and others.

The Big Fag Press is well received for its production of large-scale limited-edition prints with graphic adventurers, host printmakers-in-residence and cultural practitioners in its internship program. The space facilitates high quality printmaking that is unmatched by digital printers today. Overall the Big Fag Press aims to provide important cultural, social and educational services for the community, with workshops and mentoring opportunities available to emerging art practitioners.

Moving from its old location in Woolloomooloo, its new accommodation in the heritage-listed Glebe viaducts has been offered as apart of the Accommodation Grant Scheme by the City of Sydney. Lord Mayor Clover Moore stated that she was “delighted by how popular the program has been so far, and look forward to seeing new projects come to life in the Jubilee Park viaducts”.

This project has been assisted by a grant from Arts NSW, and supported by the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, an initiative of the Australian State and Territory Governments. The program is administered by the National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA). A weekend of cultural exploits and discussion, it will welcome an exciting new stage for the Big Fag Press.
