Melbourne-based artist Callum Morton has been awarded the 2013 Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize main award ($25,000) and Sydney artist Cigdem Aydemir has been awarded the emerging artist prize ($10,000).
A free exhibition of finalist works of more than 40 art works – including large-scale installations, photography, painting and new media works – will be presented from Friday 3 May until 1 June at the NAS Gallery, Forbes Street in Darlinghurst, Sydney.
A further prize of $1,000 will be awarded for the Viewer’s Choice at the conclusion of the public exhibition.
The judging panel consisted of guest judge Edmund Capon, former Director of the Art Gallery of NSW, Katie Dyer, Curator at the National Art School and Redlands visual arts teachers Fabian Byrne and Mark Harpley.
The Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize has a unique model that seeks to encourage mentoring between younger and older generations by selecting pairs of established and emerging artists to show together.
The Prize celebrates its 17th year in 2013 and was curated by respected artist Julie Rrap, herself a previous recipient of the Prize. Both of the winning artworks will be acquired into the Redlands permanent collection.
