Mark Valenzuela: Bantay-Salakay

Entering a hostile environment of shards, spikes, walls, weeds and noise, in this exhibition of Adelaide-based artist Mark Valenzuela, audiences encounter an installation combining ceramics, steel, textiles, timber, sound and more.

In Bantay-Salakay, layered with colliding ideas – where, for example, spiky ceramics connote colonising and oppressive forces in some cases and nod to anarchic resistance to dominating forces in others –, the artist explores those offensive and defensive strategies embedded in our environments; the role of power in determining whether such strategies represent oppression or resistance being on show.
