Jane de la Vega: VANPARKS

For many years Jane de la Vega painted empty fibro south-coast holiday houses, but now the artist paints in van parks.

Those who see these works assume, incorrectly the artist says, that these subjects are painted simply to record a dying iconic vernacular. But it’s more complicated than that. Van externals are painted, but it’s the inside that interests. Was this van once part of a hope? Because now it’s going nowhere. Vans up on bricks, hemmed in; is it resignation or celebration here – the artist aims to convey both.
