Shireen Taweel: Edge of the C

Sydney-based multidisciplinary artist Shireen Taweel’s practice rests within a diasporic landscape she inhabits as a Lebanese Australian. Here, the contours of the cosmos – celestial and cultural – are traced through a series of architectural and navigational affirmations, imagining future migration and pilgrimage in space.

Driven by a desire for a more culturally diverse future, and conceptually referencing instruments used to measure the distance between two objects – the astrolabe, quadrant and sextant –, Taweel reflects on the consequences of the relationship between science and spirituality, through copper sculptures, drawing and prints.
