On Sunday May 4, from 10am to 5pm, Hazelhurst will be transformed into a vibrant venue of free family events for Art Fest; a full day of art activities and workshops, music, Wild Ones Art & Design Market and guided tours along with a delicious assortment of food.
Join a guided tour of the three current exhibitions in The Regional Gallery. The first exhibition, the Kaldor Family Collection: Artist Room # 2 with contemporary artists Francis Alÿs and Bill Viola. The second exhibition is Ken & Julia Yonetani’s The Last Supper, a new installation commissioned by Hazelhurst, which recreates the Last Supper dining table, is sculpted entirely from salt. Finally, Striking Contrasts features video work by various contemporary Australian artists and explores the division between film-making and fine art practice.

Once you’ve finished in the gallery, you may like to join one of the free family art-making activities in the Gallery Foyer and studios. There’s an Expressive Faces workshop, where you give your best expression, have your photo taken and then decorate a frame for your new artwork. Neural Knitworks allows you to create a neuron using knitting, crocheting and craft techniques, which you can contribute to be part of a giant brain to be exhibited in the Hazelhurst Community Gallery in August.
Hazelhurst gardens will also offer a number of free exciting activities to entertain the whole family. You can learn about Francis Alÿs’ video work Railings (currently playing in the Gallery foyer) and then take a tour of the sounds of Hazelhurst grounds finishing with a percussion workshop using everyday objects.
Hazelhurst will also launch a new garden installation Haus of Kitteh by performance duo The Motel Sisters. Visitors will be able to enter the Haus of Kitteh, a frosted gingerbread house, to discover a shrine to cat loving internet culture, where the cats, in return for their pimped out temple, grant the wishes of their devoted priestesses. Come along and meet the Motel Sisters and bring a small pink item to leave in the shrine and make a wish.
The gardens will also feature a fabulous array of artisan markets which you can browse while enjoying the vinyl sounds of DJ Mr Crispe. Over 35 stalls featuring jewellery, textiles, homewares and accessories crafted by designers and artisans, both local and from further afield. The Wild Ones Market will feature some of Sydney’s hottest creatives.
Come along, there’s something for everyone!
