Horizon Festival is a multi-arts festival including music, art, theatre, dance, workshops, ceremony, and family events, taking shape across the Sunshine Coast, from coastland to hinterland to industrial pockets, from 25 August to 3 September 2023.

Reflecting on the ‘here and now’, at the core of the programming is connection to place, strengthening the ecology of Kabi Kabi and Jinibara art and culture practices and providing experiences of First Nations’ work from local and national artists. Kabi Kabi Connections by Helena Gulash and James Muller ties these concepts together in an immersive projection artwork, illuminating the waters of the Maroochy River with the visual arts of the Kabi Kabi peoples. Likewise, Njumga Djum Yo: ran Ba Djuwan is an exhibition exploring the intricate connection between people and culture and the return to Country after forced displacement.

Other festival highlights include You Are Neither Here Nor There, an exhibition that brings together four projects of Queensland-based artist Sam Cranstoun, displaying key works including a series of human-scaled observational towers acknowledging our increasingly surveilled existence, both online and in real life – alongside new paintings that extend the artist’s investigation of modernist art and design, the built environment, and capitalism.

Exploring a sense of vivid art expression, WARP by local artist Jack MacRae is an explosion of distilled geometric forms, with selected works animated into an interactive motion experience – Concrete Collage is presented across recreational pathways and pavements, collectively forming a lively art trail.

Finally, the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2023 returns to Caloundra Regional Gallery, showcasing the work of forty finalists.
