Indigenous Archives: The Making and Unmaking of Aboriginal Art

Indigenous Archives: The Making and Unmaking of Aboriginal Art
Edited by Darren Jorgensen and Ian McLean
UWA Publishing

Archiving occurs across all cultures and is hugely important, as the editors of this unique anthology note it is “the site of ideology and power, produces social order and the culture that constitutes it.” We have looked to records for ‘truth’ and erstwhile to justify beliefs or actions. Today we see this as a flawed method as voices, events or modes of communication can be excluded or misrepresented. ‘Indigenous Archives’ assembles 18 essays that investigate ‘the archive’ as a struggle with the advent of colonisation, the unusual ways we can use accounts and how they can be empowering or readdressed in visual art.
