Posters of Toulouse-Lautrec’s palm trees adorned Jasper Knight’s childhood bedroom walls; from overhanging fronds and their hypnotic rustlings to curved, sturdy trunks that sharpen their iconic silhouettes – mesmerising, unforgettable. Now, Knight turns to native Fijian and local Perth palms. With colour central to his practice, he captures these trees filtered by the day’s passing: golden yellow to ochre at dusk, blue through the night, and white to yellow at daybreak. Bold swathes of paint in almost monochromatic palettes push the works into abstraction, proposing alternative views on reality.
