Jonathan Jones: untitled (walam-wunga.galang)

Wiradjuri/Kamilaroi artist Jonathan Jones celebrates the south-east cultural practice of collecting seeds, grinding them to make flour, then bread, for untitled (walam-wunga.galang), 2020–21, a collaborative project with Uncle Stan Grant Senior and Beatrice Murray.

Jones shares that this practice has occurred for countless generations, referencing a grindstone believed to be 32,000 years old unearthed in central New South Wales. This concept takes centre stage in the artwork – carved out of stone, a minimalist sculpture remains imbued with local meaning and the knowledge that this ancient tradition continues.
