‘justiceINjustice’ features six newly commissioned works developed through research and collaborative conversation between seven contemporary Australian artists and three lawyers – Karen Wells, Ray Watterson and Robert Cavanagh. Miscarriages of justice, official corruption, wrongful detention and mistreatment, and investigative failures are explored via several high-profile cases – baby Azaria Chamberlain, murderer Kathleen Folbigg and unlawfully detained Cornelia Rau, among others.
Curated by Carolyn McKay, the exhibition is on show at Newcastle’s The Lock-Up until 20 May; accompanied by a panel discussion on Sunday 7 April from 3-4pm, and a symposium, in partnership with the University of Newcastle Law School & Legal Centre on Friday 18 May.
Artists include Corinne Brittain, Rob Cleworth, Blak Douglas, John A Douglas, Leah Emery, Lezlie Tilley and Richard Lewer.
