Kunmanara Pompey was born into a community on the southern stretches of the Northern Territory’s Finke River. Kunmanara’s expressive, contemporary style features elements of her traditional country’s landscapes – hills, flowers, rock holes, trees and sand dunes.
In late 2007, she suffered a mild stroke that affected her left hand. She recovered and regained strength and continued to paint again, reinventing herself through her right hand – a credit to her strong character, creative spirit, independence, steely determination and strong work ethic.
This is the first exhibition of Kunmanara’s work since her passing in November 2011.
