Liz Williams: Body Language

Liz Williams: Body Language
Margot Osborne and Grant Hancock
Wakefield Press

Liz Williams (1942-2017) explored the realities and complexities of human emotion, movement and expression in her unique figurative coil-built clay sculptures. She captured grace and beauty in gesture and pose, and often presented figures as part of a wider theatrical narrative. European traditions, Mexican folk-art, Catholic ceremony, Baroque painting, Cycladic sculpture, Japanese Shinto art, adornment and children’s playground rituals all inspired her work. This monograph features 70 photographs by Grant Hancock of early works from the 1980s to the final ‘Bride’ series (2013-16), essays by Margot Osborne, Catherine Speck, Damon Moon and Wendy Waller and journal entries by the artist from her travels 1991-2016, which altogether present an insightful account of this remarkable ceramicist.
