The annual Lord Mayor’s Photographic Awards invited Australian professional shutterbugs, as well as some amateur snappers, to capture Brisbane’s cultural life through images reflecting the city’s creative lifestyle. Submissions of original work represented an expressive, energetic and enthusiastic Brisbane.
The Photographic Awards provide a cash prize to category winners. The three categories include the $10,000 Open Category, the $2,000 Tertiary Category and the $1,000 People’s Choice Award.
The 2016 Open winner is Karina Eastway for her work entitled Boys with bat and balloons (2016).
“This photo was taken at the Roma Street Parklands. Two boys are struck by the effect of mist and sunlight in Brisbane’s Roma Street Parklands. The shot was taken on the rainforest boardwalk after a birthday party and game of cricket on the lawn.” – Karina Eastway
The 2016 Tertiary winner is Evelina Fietisova with The trash queen (2016).
“As I walked with Anna down the silent street we found ourselves near an old bus parking area. We climbed over the fence and entered one of the buses. Being filled with rubbish, the old bus with no windows had sun coming out, bursting its beams casting dramatic rays of light. It is wonderful to find such atmospheric spots in Brisbane. This photo depicts that everything and everyone in our world has its own beauty; and this beauty is born in the eye of the beholder” – Evelina Fietisova
