Luke Willis Thompson: Misadventure

Three projects will be installed across as many galleries styled as a ‘time-lapse’ of the first five years of artist Luke Willis Thompson’s practice. He navigates complex histories and colonial hierarchies via signs, realities and visual culture that point to violent racism in Europe and the Asia-Pacific.

Installing gravestones for Sucu Mate/Born Dead (2016), the artist gives form to the implicit ranking of life in a cemetery where coloniser’s graves sit atop a hill as migrant labourers are relegated to the bottom. The Institute of Modern Art has commissioned Thompson’s first film work that draws on the footage of Andy Warhol.
