Mapping Melbourne 2018 | Contemporary Asian Art

Returning for its sixth year, independent festival ‘Mapping Melbourne’ brings over 100 artists from across Australia, China, India, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand to the Victorian capital for two weeks of exhibitions, performance art and public installation, from 1 to 15 December 2018.

Exploring the themes of Asia and identity, the extraordinary program of events celebrates the synergies that exist between all people.

Highlights include ‘#Perempuan (#woman)’, a group show in collaboration with Project 11 of emerging Indonesian artists. Curated by Santy Saptari, the exhibition explores issues around the lived experience of women in Indonesia regarding public visibility and sociocultural roles.

Pimpisa Tinpalit, Silence S1.2, 2018, fibreglass; for ‘The Depth of Simplicity’

‘The Depth of Simplicity’ will showcase the work of four Melbourne-based multi-disciplinary contemporary artists – Annette Chang, Ellen Yeong Gyeong Son, Supina Bytol and Pimpisa Tinpalit – with heritage in Asia as they unpack each of their own personal experiences in their installations. While ‘The Embodied Landscape’ focuses on regional identities in an exhibition of Indigenous art in photographs, film and performance, happening in the remote town Rainbow.

Visitors can also see Dumpling Boy Temple, an art installation made from manufactured objects of mixed traditions and symbols in contemporary Asian ritual culture. Artist UB (Youbi Lee) invites festival-goers into this kitsch temple space in a pseudo-shamanistic performance that turns audience members into tourists.

‘Mapping Melbourne’ will launch at the MPavilion on Friday 30 November, 6-9pm with live performances, installations and interactions.
