Marrickville by Night, at Chrissie Cotter Gallery, is an exploration by eight inner west artists of the area’s rich culture and environment. The artists create impressions of Marrickville, by observing the varied urban landscape, the diversity of its people and the contrasting effects of light, capturing a range of unique tones and moods.
Participating artists include Rita Orsini, Julie Ashcroft, Santo Caggegi, Patricia Doughty, Ellen, Fiedler, Rachel Honnery, Valentina Iastrebova, and Marilyn Wright.
Featured in the exhibition is Rita Orsini, who turns her paintings into lamps, bringing together colour, light, and textiles to explore the theme of transformation and the exploration of multi-dimensional narratives. She removes her canvas from its frame and mounts it as a tall tubular lampshade on a recycled pvc pipe and with a low energy light inside. The painting tells one story when the light is off, and it takes another warm dimension and leafy transparency when the light is turned on.
