Mitch Cairns contemplates the nature of art making and the unfolding process of inspiration. In early 2011, Cairns enrolled at the Tom Bass Studio Sculpture School and used the school’s foundations of observation and technique to generate ‘Bass Principles’ – a selection of abstracted ‘studio self-portraits’ and transcriptions of a sculpture generated but omitted from the final presentation.
In parallel with these works, Cairns presents a series of drawings and prints that explore the space of the cartoon as a telling, occasionally tragic but succinct expression of meaning.
