Newcastle-born and 2015 Archibald Prize-winning painter Nigel Milsom presents a new body of work enriched by video and sculpture in a heritage Police Station, now a multidisciplinary gallery space, the Lock Up.
Milsom’s temporal approach to storytelling relies on symbolism, a shadowy palette moving deftly between mediums synchronous with whatever idea he feels compelled to express. While these personal thoughts bounce from brain, gut or memory to paper or film the result is not didactic. What the subjects may mean, cloaked in darkness and puckered by light, is a mystery to which the viewer holds a key.
