PICA’s Hatched: National Graduate Show 2018 | A new batch of finalists announced

Now in its 27th year, ‘Hatched: National Graduate Show’ will showcase the work from 30 emerging artists – recent arts graduates from 22 nation-wide higher education institutions – at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA).

The 2018 judging panel included: artist Agatha Gothe-Snape; Annika Kristensen (Senior Curator, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art); Fang-Wei Chang (Senior Curator, Taipei Fine Arts Museum), and Eugenio Viola (Senior Curator, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts) who has curated this year’s exhibition.

Kristensen hints at the content of the work, ‘Expect creativity, originality, sensitivity and dexterity from each of the nominated graduates who, in their own distinct ways, tackle ideas from the environment to society, identity to technology, with sophistication, perception and occasionally, humour.’

Spanning the disciplines of painting, sculpture, installation, performance, sound and video the purpose of ‘Hatched’ is twofold; to provide a glimpse into the scope of the work produced by contemporary artists in Australia whilst providing exposure and support to talented art graduates. “Hatched’ frequently provides artists with their first opportunity to present work within a supportive and professional public gallery environment as well as an instant network of peers across the country,’ says PICA’s Director Amy Barrett-Lennard; ‘The impact of these experiences cannot be underestimated.’ Previously nominated and now successful in their careers include artists Shaun Gladwell, Julie Dowling and Khaled Sabsabi.
