Entries are open for the 2018 Tapestry Design Prize for Architects (TDPA)

The Tapestry Design Prize for Architects (TDPA) represents the collaboration between Australian Tapestry Workshop (ATW), Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), Architecture Media, and the Tapestry Foundation of Australia for the purpose of bringing together architects and weavers in the creation of a site-specific tapestry design. In an endeavor to foster the enduring connection between architectural space and textile fabric, this initiative provides an internationally unique platform for both practitioners and allows emerging architects to contemplate the potential of the tapestry in relation to intimate and public spaces.

This year’s hypothetical tapestry site is Boullée’s mooted building, a tribute to Isaac Newton, that was inspiration for the MONA’s Pharos Wing. MONA owner David Walsh suggests ‘the tapestry could potentially be hung on the wall behind James Turrell’s Unseen Seen (2017).’

Antonia Syme, Director of ATW explains that ‘MONA is both visionary and breath-taking; David Walsh’s brief for the TDPA 2018 will challenge architects creatively and their understanding of the intersection between tapestry and space.’

Justin Hill’s 22 Temenggong Road, Twilight, being woven by ATW’s weavers

Since its inception in 2015, two TDPA winners have had their designs translated into tapestries at the ATW. These were 2015 joint winner John Wardle Architects’ design Perspectives on a Flat Surface for Sydney’s Phoenix Gallery, and 2016 winner Justin Hill’s 22 Temenggong Road, Twilight, originally designed for the architect’s living space and currently in the process of being produced by a team of ATW weavers.

Judging this year’s entries will be well respected architectural practitioners Professor Kay Lawrence AM (Chair); Adjunct Professor Peter Elliott AM LFRAIA; Timothy Hill; Andrew Burges; Alice Hampson; and Dimmity Walker.

Entries are currently being accepted globally until 15 June with finalists nominated in July and subsequent winners by August 16 before the finalists’ designs are showcased in an exhibition.
