Working primarily across drawing and installation, interdisciplinary artist Tia Madden’s practice is concerned with the porous boundary between drawing and writing, poetics of illegibility, and the potential for abstract marks to behave communicatively when framed – or misread – as language.
By combining abstractions and ancient languages into notational sequences, in The Uncode Madden constructs a large-scale text-like installation that teeters on the edge of legibility; speculating if mark-making in a contemporary art context can cross spatial and temporal distances – to make contact with ancient humans, distant futures, and metaphysical realms.
