Congratulations to Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran, the winner of the 2015 Sidney Myer Fund Australian Ceramic Award $50,000 acquisition prize. Art Almanac chats with Nithiyendran about his work, practice and love of ceramics in the current issue. “Clay is a highly-charged material. Its steeped in Eastern and Western art and cultural histories,” says Nithiyendran. “I feel a real affinity with the medium and thoroughly enjoy working with it and developing my technical skills.” click here to read the full interview.
Deputy Director, National Gallery Australia, and former SAM Director, Kirsten Paisley says, “Ramesh has produced an extraordinary body of major sculptural works that are exceptionally exciting. Drawing on diverse sources from pre-colonial Hindu devotional sculpture to Christianity and sexualized bodies he explores fertility and creation, religion and gender. His work evokes the energy and reverence of `the deity’ while embodying the playfulness of a story-book action hero.”
Nithiyendran’s work alongside the other finalists – Adam John Cullen, Penny Byrne, Ruth Hutchinson and Sanné Mestrom – are on display at Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) until November.
