Melbourne-based artist Julia Trybala’s work centres on the complexity of human relationships, where personal experiences, conversations with family and friends, and art historical references serve as inspiration, and politics of the feminine body in space are central.
Refusing the crowded allure of elementary eroticism or overt transgression, New Paintings triangulates eros, containment failure, and stratification – all demanding attention as its dominant mode of encountering. An intimate and visceral experience of the uncanny results; where, as Freud suggests: “everything that ought to have remained hidden and secret has become visible.”
