Melbourne-based Hugo Blomley works primarily in sculpture, exploring the intersection of conceptual systems and material transformation.
A utilitarian cover for outdoor plumbing, the ‘pump cover’ also denotes an oversized shirt worn at a gym – shed to reveal a muscle pump; here, Blomley presents four abstract sculptures. Balancing a sensuous appreciation for the integrity of their materials and surfaces – patinated, poriferous, or highly polished – with the mimetic magic of art, fantasies arise, yet none of these associations settle into neat referents.
