Congo, lives and works Melbourne) is an artist whose works span various mediums including image-making, performance, installation, and film. His practice explores Black life and representation, dislocation, and Indigeneity. In his films, urban spaces play a central role, recast from the everyday into theatrical sites of exploration and reflection. toaishara has exhibited and performed at Arts Centre Melbourne, Sydney Opera House, Blak Dot Gallery, Wyndham Art Gallery, Arts House, and National Gallery Victoria, among other spaces. He has also received numerous awards and fellowships including a Green Room award, Arts House Evolution Award, Wyndham Art Prize, Darebin Art Prize, and most notably the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography award.

May 13 to Aug 7 দাদার খাঁজ / Finding Dada by Anindita Banerjee – an interdisciplinary artist and “twice uprooted Indian” living on the lands of the Wadawurrung people of the Kulin Nation (Ballarat, Victoria). Her work interrogates ideas of cultural otherness, authentic identity, and the sense of home. This exhibition features photographic portraits of key male figures in her life, including from the Indigenous community, in whom she finds reflections of her Dada’s (grandfather’s) facial features. She overlays these portraits with patterns reconstructed from memories of ritualistic ceremonies and mark making. While creating these gestural hybrid rituals, she wonders where her place is as an immigrant to the unceded lands of present-day Australia. Curated by Kira Godoroja-Prieckaerts.

To May 24 Coded blooms | flowers have never been innocent – begins with the American artist Robert Mapplethorpe, whose photographs of flowers set the tone for a contemporary rereading of the floral. Drawn from the collection of the National Gallery of Australia, his works provide a charged framework for the exhibition. In his hands, the bloom becomes sculptural, erotic, and exacting. From here, four artists push the floral beyond polite still life traditions into new, unruly terrain. Pat Brassington, Del Kathryn Barton, Jake Preval, and Meng-Yu Yan – each take the floral in distinct directions, exploring the psychological, the sensual, the bodily, and the relational. Curated by Angela Connor.
