Cementa_13 Contemporary Arts Festival

The village of Kandos in the Mudgee Region of New South Wales has announced a new contemporary arts festival, ‘Cementa_13’, to be held from 1 – 4 February 2013.

The festival will feature 40 artists over four days who will present sound and video installations, exhibitions and performances. At night, the festival will host a series of films to round out the fun, creative experience.

A nod to its industrial past, Cementa_13 was formed when the Kandos Cement Works was closed after nearly 100 years. The Works produced the cement that built much of Sydney, including the world famous Sydney Harbour Bridge.

A wonderful example of regional Australia’s creative enthusiasm, festival director, Ann Finegan, believes “‘Cementa_13’ will be critical to developing the cultural infrastructure of the region to support local artists and will go a long way towards re-visioning perceptions of rural NSW for culture and tourism”.
Venues for the festival include Kandos’ Spanish mission architecture buildings, shop fronts, halls, clubhouses, the golf-course, bush land and escarpments.

The festival will engage the materials and the people of the town over four days and four nights. With 2013 welcoming the inaugural festival, it will be an independent biennial event celebrating the state of contemporary art practice in Australia.

The festival was formed by INDEX, Artspace and Kandos Projects. Described by art industry insiders as the Perspecta of Woop Woop, ‘Cementa_13’ stands poised on the periphery of the globalized art world.

A detailed program of artists, exhibitions, events and their venues is available on the festival’s website.
