The ‘2013 Perth Festival’ is aglow with its broad theme based around light and energy with international and local artists creating artworks engaged with light, film, motion and sound. Humble materials and sophisticated technologies each find force in these contemporary art works resulting in experiences and explorations of perception for the viewer that are equally sensory and cerebral.
Acclaimed media artist Jim Campbell and his remarkable work Scattered Light will light up Kings Park through February and March. By day, this hybrid of art and science makes for a canopy of suspended white energy efficient light bulbs. While at night, it vibrantly morphs into a large scale three-dimensional screen projecting the bustling energy of city life. Scattered Light adds to the beauty of our iconic park with an outdoor sensory spectacle that is not to be missed.
Italian artist, Grazia Toderi, shares her alluring digital visions that are equally enthralling and unsettling. Her work has been described as ‘frescoes of light’, acknowledging the artist’s Italian heritage yet also pointing to her technique of layering drawings, photographs and maps to create mesmerising cityscapes on film. Toderi’s work suspends you between the wonder of city lights at night and a disarming sense of surveillance.
Festival director, Jonathan Holloway, says of the program; “we are thrilled that luminaries from the world of Visual Arts will help light up Perth with their art in this Festival”. He urges visitors to “let the magic of Jim Campbell’s work in Kings Park set you on a journey to visit all the projects on offer across the galleries and in unexpected places like the shop fronts at Central Institute and the new Brookfield Place in the city.”
