James Lieutenant adopts alchemy with this new body of work that seeks to summon an ‘unexplainable aura… a special interaction between the work and the viewer when encountered in the flesh’, writes Kate Vassallo. Layering colour and texture, the artist mollifies the urgency to grasp a single reading or objective view, a feeling back-grounded by recent research into techniques such as sfumato and chiaroscuro. At first glance, the surfaces are textured, which belies their true form – a shimmering product of a light and multifarious touch.
