Bette Mifsud: Spare Time

“This body of 34 outdoor tableaus is derived from 1950s and 60s snapshots graphically manipulated to resemble impressionistic memories from which details have, over time, fallen away.

The originals were taken by my late father-in-law Doug Shearston, a keen amateur photographer and WWII veteran. The overarching connection between the predominantly white Australia of that period and multi-ethnic Australia today is family. The near-global ubiquity of the internet instantly disseminates family snapshots, weaving a growing web of human connections that increasingly reflects and reinforces our infinite collective memory.” – Dr Bette Mifsud
