The 2014 Montalto Sculpture Prize Exhibition opened last Sunday 16 February.
Victorian Minister for the Arts, Heidi Victoria, opened the exhibition and announced the winner of the $30,000 acquisitive Prize as Adam Stone, for his work, ‘A Fall From Grace (self portrait cash)’.
Stone grew up in Somers, on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. His work is a hyper realistic sculpture of an extreme sport athlete face planting, applied to the notion of the hero in classical sculpture.
Winning the $1,000 Mitchell Family Award was Ben Carroll for his work entitled ‘Stepping Stones, Stumbling Blocks’. The work is a collection of balls and blocks using jetty timber, planking from old fishing boats and cast iron from old baths. Carrol is also from Somers, making the connection in his acceptance speech.
Curator of the Prize, Neil Williams, stated that four out of the twelve major winners of the Montalto Sculpture Prize have had a connection with Somers.
The People’s Choice Award, awarded to the artist whose sculpture garners the highest number of public votes, will be announced at the end of the exhibition.
The 23 finalist sculptures join the 25 strong permanent collection throughout the grounds of the property with vines, farm land and produce gardens as the backdrop.
